MASS TO CELEBRATE THE START OF THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL 17th August 2008
The Cardinal's sermon

At the end of the Festival Mass, celebrated by Cardinal O’Brien last Sunday in his Cathedral in Edinburgh, the Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, the Right Hon George Grubb, addressed the congregation.

He continued the theme of the Cardinal on the value of prayerful silence and then at the end of his address led the congregation in a prayerful hymn:  ‘Ubi Caritas’ (‘Where there is love’).  The hymn was soon taken up by the choir and all of the congregation all singing together:  ‘Where there is charity and love there is God!’.

The Lord Provost himself had been a minister in the Church of Scotland prior to his retirement and then his election as councillor before being nominated as the Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh.

The Lord Provost leads the singing of "Ubi Est Caritas et Amor, Deus Ibi East" (Where is love and loving kindness, there God is), as a blessing on the City of Edinburgh
