ST ANDREWS & EDINBURGH - A FAIRTRADE DIOCESE

Cardinal O’ Brien said:

“The importance of a commitment to Fairtrade cannot be overemphasised. A central tenet of the way we live our Christian life concerns justice and equity, and time and again in the scriptures we hear of the importance of right dealing with people, of giving special attention  to the poor and needy, of dealing fairly in trade and commerce.”

In May 2008 St Andrews and Edinburgh became a Fairtrade Archdiocese. This means that we promote Fairtrade wherever possible and especially during Fairtrade Fortnight.

Over 50% of parishes in the archdiocese are Fairtrade. See below to find out what we do and whether your parish is one.

The Gillis Centre and Café Camino both use Fairtrade products.

About Fairtrade

Fairtrade guarantees a better deal for farmers and workers in the developing world.  When you by a product carrying the Fairtrade Mark you are making sure that the farmer gets a price that covers the costs of production. On top of that a social premium is paid to make sure that the local community benefits from Fairtarde too.  It is definitely worth finding out more about Fairtrade and getting involved.

How to become a Fairtarde Parish

Being a Fairtrade Parish means publicly declaring your support for Fairtrade – it is a good way of raising people awareness of what Fairtrade is about. To become a Fairtrade Parish you must commit to:

  • Use Fairtrade tea and coffee at all parish meetings and after mass, if served;
  • Move forward on using other Fairtarde products, e.g. sugar and fruit juice; and
  • Promote Fairtrade during Fairtarde Fortnight and at during the year through events, activities and worship wherever possible.

There are lots of ways which these parishes promote Fairtrade including wine tastings, cookery demos, breakfasts and fashion shows.

Archdiocese Fairtrade Group

We are a small group of volunteers from Fairtrade parishes in the archdiocese. The members of the group are:

Laura Petrie, St John the Baptist, Corstorphine

Norma Daniels Emm, St Peter’s, Morningside

Alice Hoffie, Our Lady, Star of the Sea, North Berwick:

   Alison Wylie, St Mary’s Cathedral:

Irene Turnbull, St Ninian’s and St Triduana’s, Restalrig

We aim to provide support to Fairtrade parishes by sharing ideas and experience as well as making sure that the archdiocese retains its Fairtrade status.
