Chaplaincy
Each Secondary School is encouraged to update by making the most of the various inservice opportunities available to all staff.  Suitable candidates are encouraged to avail themselves of the Post Graduate Diploma in Chaplaincy Studies which is validated by the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh in conjunction with the University of Maynooth.
Welcome to the Educational Chaplaincy in the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh where we have a passionate commitment to exploring new directions and methods in caring for and educating our community towards a vibrant future.   As the playwright Arnold Wesker states:  ‘If you don’t care you’ll die.’
I am Anne Marie McLaughlin, a Franciscan sister whose background is quite varied in that I studied in London (England), Penn State (USA) and Maynooth (Ireland) Universities and ran various Secondary Schools before taking my present post as Director of Chaplaincy.
I am Victor Bourne, and I work closely with Sr Anne Marie to offer the Chaplaincy Diploma  Course, Inservice and a general link with those at the ‘chalk face’ in schools. In addition, I deal with practical issues and, in collaboration with Sr Anne Marie and Jennifer Myles, organise Conferences at Gillis for those directly and indirectly involved in education.  I am the Church Rep for Midlothian Council.

Educational Chaplaincy operates on various levels throughout the Archdiocese:

  • Each Secondary School aims to have a Lay Chaplaincy Team whose function is to lead and support pupils and staff in all areas of pastoral care.  Bereavement is the predominant need and concern.  Our fully qualified Chaplaincy personnel are well equipped to cope with this important aspect of life together with the myriad pastoral care needs of today’s youth.
  • Each Secondary School has at least one priest who is at the heart of the Chaplaincy Team taking care of sacramental needs throughout the school community.  Support is also offered by simply ‘being around’ in the day-to-day existence of school life.
  • Each Secondary School has access to the Director of Chaplaincy who visits, advises and oversees the Archdiocesan Programme.
